Continued Need for Less Than Lethal Weapons

Dear Students

bstk-new4The Dean recently taught the CollegeStock Community about the hundreds, if not thousands, of police departments and law enforcement agencies around the world having to change their policies on taser use because of an October 12th warning from the manufacturer of the device.

An article from a Canadian newspaper claims that TASER International (NASDAQ: TASR) “is finally accepting that its weapon can have lethal consequences,” after issuing warnings for taser users not to shoot targets in the chest.

The Dean, like Doug Millroy of The Sault Star, believes that warnings and policy changes won’t stop deaths from taser use because only a call to ban use of the deadly weapons will eliminate the problems alltogether.

Millroy’s article references a number of specific instances of death from tasers and goes on to say that 26 people have died from tasers in Canada in the past 5 years and, in nearly the same amount of time, 330 have died in the United States.

Another source suggested yesterday that tasers “have been linked to serious injuries and deaths for years and that fact—not a warning from the manufacturer—should have forced [police] departments to rethink their use.” The Morning Call brings to our attention a wrongful death case that claims excessive force was used when 32 year old Kris Lieberman was shocked “at least 11 times in less than a minute” and died. Lieberman’s family is pursuing a federal case with a $100 million price tag.

The Dean thinks it’s odd that somehow these law enforcement agencies believe the benefits outweigh the potentially enormous liability of tasers and believes these “incidents” happen far too often and amount to the loss of life in the United States and other countries. What’s frustrating for critics of the taser device is that a “less than lethal” “weapon alternative” should not result in death and multimillion dollar lawsuits.

Last night, The Arizona Republic has also called attention to the recent warnings and subsequent changes in taser use policies. This source claims that tasers have accounted for more than 400 deaths in the United States and medical examiners have only been able to rule out 30 of those deaths. Apparently 93% of taser deaths being directly linked to the fact that the “target” was jolted by 50,000 volts of electricity is not enough evidence that tasers are in fact deadly.

The Dean wonders what more needs to happen in the taser saga for police and law enforcement agencies to seriously reconsider this use. Besides the fact that The Dean believes $BSTK‘s line of products are ingenious and can be effectively used as weapon alternatives, there is an obvious need for a less than lethal replacement.

Happy Trading, The Dean
