Vivus, Inc. (NASDAQ: VVUS) $5.41 -$6.70
Shares of Vivus, Inc. (NASDAQ: VVUS) dropped precipitously on Friday, posting the largest decline on the market for the day. The biopharmaceutical company that produces medications used in the treatment of different sexual disorders and obesity lost 55.33% of its value to close the day at $5.41 a share. The plunge in VVUS prices is a result of the FDA panel recommendation against the Vivus’ weight loss drug Qnexa for security reasons.
Jinpan International Ltd.(NASDAQ: JST) $11.17 -$3.10
Jinpan International Ltd. (NASDAQ: JST) was the second-biggest percentage decliner in Friday’s trading. Shares of this manufacturer of cast resin transformers, unit substations and reactors used in the generation of wind-based energy, pummeled 21.72% to close at $11.17 a share. Trading in the stock was vibrant, about 10 times as large as the average trading volume. The primary culprit behind today’s dismal performance is the downward revised financial guidance due to strong competitive pressures from Chinese competitors.
AmeriServ Financial Inc (NASDAQ: ASRV) $1.40 -$0.34
The third largest percentage decline on July 16 was registered in the shares of AmeriServ Financial Inc. (NASDAQ: ASRV). ASRV fell 19.54% to close the day at $1.40. Trading in the shares of this bank-holding company (AmeriServ Financial Bank) was robust, totaling 4.4 times the average trading volume in the shares. ASRV is now 16.17% down on the year and only 6 cents away from its 52-week low.
Intervest Bancshares Corp. (NASDAQ: IBCA) $3.08 -$0.63
Intervest Bancshares Corp. (NASDAQ: IBCA), a bank-holding company engaged in the banking and mortgage finance business, was also among the biggest losers on Friday. Its shares fell 16.98% in a turnover that totaled 1.15 times the average trading volume. IBCA shares plummeted because of poor financial performance in the second quarter. IBCA lost nearly half its value from the beginning of the month.
Anthera Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: ANTH) $4.11 -$0.71
Anthera Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: ANTH), a pharmaceutical company developing and commercializing anti-inflammatory medicaments, including those for the treatment of cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases, fell 14.73% to close at $4.11. Trading volume was slightly above the average trading turnover over the past three months. ANTH shares are now on a course toward their 52-week low at $3.99.
